Capps Suffers Early Defeat at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. (May 23, 2004) -- Ron Capps was in position to post an opening round upset behind the wheel of his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Sunday at Route 66 Raceway, leading at half track until his Chevy Funny Car spun the tires causing Capps' car to lose traction and horsepower.

Capps, 14-time NHRA winner, powered his Skoal Racing Funny Car to a performance of 4.955 seconds at 283.85 mph, while opponent Whit Bazmore used a slightly better run of 4.855 at 312.75 to take the narrow victory.

"The car left great," Capps said. "I was really surprised that the car pulled the tires lose. It was almost an eternity before (Whit) Bazemore went around me. It's just a helpless feeling to be out there smoking the tires at 800 feet and not see a guy like Bazemore next to you. They're a top-notch crew. I thought maybe he had problems, and as our luck would have it lately, he came around me at the end."

"It's tough to swallow. We're trying harder than any other crew out there and we don't have the results to show. It's really frustrating."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 16th annual O'Reilly Summer Nationals, May 27-30, at Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kan. Capps won at Heartland Park in 1998 when he defeated Al Hofmann in the final round.
