Advance Auto Parts Monte Carlo Grabs Provisional Third

JOLIET, Ill. (Oct. 1, 2004) -- Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car opened this weekend's NHRA National Event at Route 66 Raceway with a bang -- grabbing the provisional third slot.

The California resident, who is coming off back-to-back final round appearances, clicked off a 4.818-second elapsed time at 322.27 mph. Despite intermittent rain showers canceling today's second session, Pedregon was optimistic about the start.

"It was an excellent run," Pedregon said. "The car left strong and felt great all the way down the track. (Crew chief) Wes (Cerny) said before the run that the track was in good shape and we were going to get after it.

"I kept the car right down the middle of the groove," Pedregon continued. "What a way to start the weekend. You couldn't have scripted it better. Everybody is excited on the team and we hope to keep this thing rolling. It really sets us up to go after that number one qualifying slot. Credit goes to this great team because everyone plays a part. They sure make my job a lot easier."
