Number Four Qualifier Millican Exits Early at NHRA Carquest Auto Parts Nationals

Chicago - October 3, 2004 Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing, the number four qualifier, lost in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations at the NHRA Carquest Auto Parts Nationals at Route 66 Raceway to number 13 qualifier John Smith.

In their first-ever NHRA eliminations match-up, Millican and Smith left the line almost simultaneously, and the two were dead even at the 1,000 foot mark. Both drivers crossed the finish line in 4.57 seconds, with Smith winning by a 0.032 second margin of victory.

[Chicago_release3_daylaunch.jpg] "Anytime you lose it is disappointing, but I have to give a lot of credit to this Werner Enterprises crew," said Millican. "We had a great weekend overall, and made our best runs ever at 85% nitro, so I feel that we're in position to finish the season very strong."

In qualifications, Millican piloted the blue and yellow Werner Enterprises Top Fuel dragster to its fifth best E.T. and fourth best speed ever, with a 4.540 at 326.16 mph.

Millican will finish his 2004 NHRA season at the Auto Club of Southern California Finals in Pomona, Calif., on November 11-14. He has currently raced in nine NHRA national events this season, and held the number 13 position in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points standings going into this race.

Route 66 Raceway is the site of Millican and Lehman Racing's first-ever NHRA race, when they raced the Chicago White Sox car in 1998.
