With Four Daughters, Force Acknowledges Debt to Racing Icon

YORBA LINDA, Calif. -- John Force the 13-time NHRA Funny Car champion, and daughter Ashley, driver of the Castrol Top Alcohol Dragster, were among those interviewed for the television portrait of drag racing icon Shirley Muldowney that will air at 8 p.m. (ET) Wednesday (March 8) on A&E Network's The Biography Channel.

Ms. Muldowney, the only woman ever to have won a professional championship in any motor racing series, earned 18 NHRA tour victories and three NHRA Top Fuel titles in the 1970s and 1980s. Injured in a horrific 1984 crash in Montreal, Canada, that left her with broken bones in all 10 fingers, a broken pelvis and mangled leg, she underwent five major surgeries but returned to win at Phoenix in 1989.

She remains active with the Kalitta Motorsports team on which her husband, Rahn Tobler, serves as a crew chief to Top Fuel contender Doug Kalitta.

"Shirley paved the way," Force said. "She fought the battles that opened all the doors. Bottom line, because of Shirley, if you're a girl and you want to go racing, the doors are open at the NHRA. I tell my girls they have the opportunity because of Shirley Muldowney."
