Cannon to start title defense at home track.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Defending NHRA Division 2 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Jason Cannon will be looking to start the year off strong during this weekend's Division 2 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at his home track, Gainesville Raceway. Cannon and his Caps Coach & Trailer/InsideTopAlcohol.com team hope that extensive preseason testing will help them going into this weekend.
Cannon, who lives just down the road in Middleburg, Fla., is excited to get the 2004 season underway.
"You race hard all year, and at the end of the year, you think you're ready for a break," said Cannon. "Then a few weeks later, you're ready to hit the track again. The schedule works out good for us, because we get to start the year with our first two races at Gainesville. We get to have a lot of friends and family come to the races that normally can't go where we race."
"We're going to have to hit it hard to win another championship," Cannon continued. "Last year was a fight all the way to the end, and I'm sure this year will be one too."
Team Crew Chief Will Hanna hopes the preseason testing will give them a leg up going into this weekend's race.
"We're working on some new things," stated Hanna. "We're working with Tom Conway to develop some new technology. At this point, it shows promise, but needs some more runs to be competitive. We're going to test some more Thursday and Friday prior to the event, but we're going to go more into race mode rather than experimental. With the way the A/Fuel cars are running these days, with a blown car, you really have no choice but to test if you want to stay competitive."
Team owner Phil Cannon, Jason's father, is excited to get 2004 underway as well.
"We hope to hit it hard this year," commented Cannon. "You always want to get the momentum early in the year. Hopefully our preseason testing will pay off soon, and let us have our best year yet. We were able to win the division last year, this year, we want to do well nationally, and win at least one national event. Doing well this weekend will be key in achieving that objective. We also want to do well for our sponsors Caps Coach & Trailer, InsideTopAlcohol.com, Valvoline, Wells Performance and Caps Marine Center."
Qualifying starts Saturday for the alcohol cars, with sessions at 3 & 6 p.m. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in drag racing.
