"THE SARGE" TAKES THIRD STARTING SPOT
INDIANAPOLIS, September 5, 2010 - Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, aboard his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, secured the third starting position here Sunday during final qualifying for tomorrow's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park.
Schumacher, who is an eight-time U.S. Nationals champion, will confront 14th-place qualifier, Terry Haddock, in the opening round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. ET. "It's time to put our game faces on," said the Chicago-area resident. "After five qualifying sessions, we're ready to go."
The defending NHRA Full Throttle world champion will be looking to get off on the right foot in the first round of the Countdown to 1. He entered the weekend holding third-place in the standings, 40 points removed from Larry Dixon in first.
"It's a must that we go rounds and contend for the win," said Schumacher. "You don't want to dig yourself a hole with an early exit. I'm confident the U.S. Army team will respond to the pressure just like our Army Strong Soldiers do on a daily basis."
This will be the second meeting of the season between Schumacher and Haddock. The former captured a first round victory at Englishtown, N.J. in June.
"He may not be in the Countdown, but you know he wants to take us out in the worst way," offered Schumacher. "I'm sure he'd love to play the role of the spoiler." Schumacher's desire to nail his fifth win of the year will be even greater on Labor Day given that his sponsor, the U.S. Army, is marking its 10-year anniversary with Don Schumacher Racing.
"You have that right," he said. "We've won a lot of trophies over the years, but the one tomorrow would be very special."
Antron Brown, who drives the Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster, will come out of the fifth starting spot on Monday. His first round opponent will be 12th-place qualifier, Shawn Langdon.
Brown, who is 3-0 against Langdon in eliminations this season, arrived at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals sitting in fifth-place in the points.
