INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 5) -- Some strange happenings during the 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals has turned double-duty racer Melanie Troxel from a driver into a detective.

Troxel put the ProCare Rx Dodge Charger Funny Car into Monday's eliminations with best pass of 4.146 seconds at 303.64 mph. That pass was made early in the weekend, and since then, the car has been a handful, which has sent both driver and her R2B2 Racing crew searching for solutions.

"We came out strong and put up a good number. Then it seemed we lost where we wanted to be," Troxel said. "We're still learning and trying different stuff with the addition of Richard Hogan."

Troxel has a first round matchup with No. 2 qualifier Ron Capps, who ran a 4.049 second pass at 309.77 mph.

"We're going to keep digging to get this car running quicker. I know we have the ability to do that," Troxel said. "The hotter weather tomorrow might work to our advantage a little bit."

In the Get Screened America Pro Mod Series, the In-N-Out Burger Camaro seemed on track for a solid weekend before it mysteriously took a turn for the worse during Sunday's first round of eliminations.

The In-N-Out car was making solid passes all weekend, and qualified eighth in the field with a 5.951 second pass at 247.16 mph. Against Rickie Smith in the first round of eliminations, Troxel's car darted left off the starting line, which forced her to pedal the car.

By the time Troxel recovered, Smith was well on his way to a winning pass of 5.974 seconds at 241.84 mph. Troxel crossed the line in 6.915 seconds at 210.08 mph.

"We're looking at the computer right now," Troxel said immediately following the run. "Something seems to be amiss with the car. That wasn't what we'd been expecting at all.

"Our last two passes the car went down and ran a 5.95 both times. We had no expectation of running any slower than that. We'll sort out any problems on the car we might have."
