GOODYEAR-EQUIPPED CARS SCORE SIX WINS AT NHRA U.S. NATIONALS
CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 7, 2009) -- As the Goodyear airship "The Spirit of Goodyear" soared majestically above the 55th Mac Tools US Nationals, six drivers raced to victory on Goodyear tires at O'Reilly Raceway Park.
Goodyear's win total equaled all other tiremakers combined. The annual event is drag racing's most prestigious happening with 12 categories spread among the professional and sportsmen classes.
"I can retire now," said Edmond Richardson, the Super Comp winner.
The Full Throttle Drag Racing Series professional category drivers who raced to wins on Goodyear Eagles included Tony Schumacher (in Top Fuel), Ashley Force Hood (Funny Car) and Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock). Roger Burgess (Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge) was the other professional winner. The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series winners who raced on Goodyears included Edmond Richardson (Super Comp) and Brian Forrester (Super Gas).
"Our Goodyear Eagles performed very well, as we expected, this weekend," said Carolyn Ashbee, Goodyear's sales account manager for drag racing. "It was fun to have the blimp here for two days and I'm sure the television viewers got some great looks at the facility and the crowd from the blimp's vantage point."
Goodyear was also a winner when Charlie Westcott captured the MOPAR Hemi Challenge event for 1968 Dodge Darts and Barracudas in the Stock Eliminator category. It marked the fourth time in five years that Goodyear has won the special event. Goodyear's previous wins came with Charlie Westcott Jr. as the driver.
All together, Goodyear-shod cars qualified for seven final rounds.
Schumacher's victory was his eighth and fourth straight at Indy. The eight wins pulled him even with the legendary Don Garlits for U.S. Nationals wins. He beat Larry Dixon in the final round.
"I don't know why it's our lucky track," Schumacher said. "I'm just glad it is."
Doug Kalitta and Clay Millican secured the final Top Fuel berths in the NHRA's Countdown to One playoff system.
Force Hood's Funny Car win capped a dramatic weekend for the category. She beat teammate Robert Hight in the final round after Hight clinched a spot in the Countdown when he got to the final. Force Hood won at Indy in a Top Alcohol Dragster sportsman car, using Goodyear tires, in 2004.
"I remember Dad (four-time Indy winner John Force) winning all the time," Force Hood said with a grin. "Now, to be older and to be involved in it, it's not that easy."
Hight and teammate Mike Neff grabbed the final available two Funny Car Countdown berths during.
Coughlin's Pro Stock win came at the expense of Greg Stanfield and was Coughlin's fourth overall win at Indy. Monday's win was his third in Pro Stock. He also has a sportsman win here.
Kurt Johnson, Rickie Jones and Johnny Gray clinched the final Pro Stock Countdown spots Monday.
"It's a six-race dash for the Full Throttle championship," Coughlin said.
