DENSHAM RUNS SEASON QUICKEST PASS AT U.S. NATIONALS

INDIANAPOLIS (September 3, 2005) -- Gary Densham is poised to defend his title at Indianapolis Raceway Park. After all, half the battle is just qualifying for the 51st annual NHRA U.S. Nationals.

Densham has done just that after three rounds of qualifying. Densham drove the Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo to a season-quickest elapsed time Saturday, turning in a 4.835-second pass at 310.77 mph.

"We're happy because the very idea that we can still defend our U.S. Nationals victory from last year means a great deal to me," Densham said. "On top of that we were part of the quickest Funny Car field at the biggest race of the year. It was a good day of racing for sure."

"There are a lot of good hot rods here this weekend. Everyone comes to Indy ready to throw everything they have on the track. I'm real happy we're qualified and I think we can stay that way after two more rounds."

For now, the team is in the 14th position, but who knows what can happen during Sunday's final two qualifying sessions.

"The good thing is that we tested here last week and made a pretty good run in the heat of the day," crew chief Greg Amaral said. "We are making baby steps toward having a real good tune-up in this Funny Car and I'm pleased with the progress. It makes me more confident going into the rest of the season as well as racing in the heat of the day on Monday."
