CLERMONT, IND. (SEPT. 5) -- Defending POWERade NHRA champion Larry Dixon qualified No.3 after one pass under the lights at the 49th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The Miller Lite/Snake Racing dragster posted a time of 4.503 at 326.08 mph in the first of three qualifying sessions. Traditionally ran over Labor Day weekend, the prestigious race was rescheduled for this weekend (Sept. 5-7th) due to severe weather conditions.

After one round of qualifying current POWERade NHRA points leader Larry Dixon is at No.3. Just before 8:00 PM Dixon posted a successful time of 4.530-seconds at 326.08 mph. "I thought we did well, we picked up a few positions tonight," said Dixon. We came in No. 5 and now we're No. 3."

Dixon paired against David Baca who established a new IRP track record tonight with a lap time of 4.499 but it was Dixon in 1999 who first broke the 4.4-second sound barrier (4.486 second, April 9, 1999, Baytown, TX).

"Our crew chief at the time, Dale Armstrong was really motivated to do it," said Dixon. "He's always been about breaking barriers and that was something he had always wanted, to be the first team to run under 4.5-seconds.

But it was that race we broke the sound barrier but didn't qualify and there was LaHaie with Doug Herbert's team and they won the race."

The winner of eight NHRA National events in 2003, Dixon would like to add another U.S. Nationals title to his record (1995 and 2001).

The Funny Car Shoot Out will run tomorrow along with two final rounds of top fuel qualifying at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM (ET). Sunday final elimination is scheduled for an 11:00 AM start.

Tomorrow ESPN2 will air one hour of qualifying beginning at 11:00 PM (ET). On Sunday from 2:00-4:00 PM catch additional qualifying and coverage of the $100,000 Funny Car Shoot Out and one hour of final eliminations airing at 11:00 PM (ET).
