Indianapolis, Ind. (Sept. 2): One day after celebrating her 28th birthday, rookie Top Fuel pilot, Melanie Troxel was bumped from the U.S. Nationals field to the No. 19 qualifying position. The Colorado native will have two remaining attempts on Sunday to make this prestigious field.

In the first round of the day, Troxel limped down the track to a 5.035 e.t. at 283.97 mph. "We are having some ignition problems," explained Troxel, "we put a couple of cylinders out before half track."

During the afternoon session, Troxel and her all new Exide Batteries crew again had minor difficulties with their ignition system and were only able to run the 1320 foot distance in 4.937 seconds.

"We tested here last week and ran a 4.68, so we know we are capable of making the field," commented the driver, "we'll just have to do the job tomorrow."

Troxel's chances of making the field are very good as crew chief, Dan Olson has tuned her teammate, Tony Schumacher's dragster into every race during the 1999 and 2000 NHRA seasons.
