CLERMONT, Ind. - Entering today's final qualifying session, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Paul Jones was not qualified. Undaunted, Jones and the Edgecomb Racing team put the Western Stabilization/Redline Oil Blown Alcohol Dragster solidly into the field of this weekend's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Jones, from Stockton, Calif., ran an elapsed time of 5.573 seconds at 255.68 mph to put him in the 16 car field in the sixth position.

"Sitting there in the staging lanes, the first few cars in front of me really went out there and shook," said Jones. "The car two cars in front of me shook the wing off the car, then the next car went out there and shook the parachute out, so I pretty much prepared myself for a tireshaking run."

"As it turns out," Jones continued. "I let the clutch out, and it went out there and shook pretty hard at the top of low gear, and I ended up short shifting it because of the shake. It wasn't that bad, because as soon as I shifted it, the shift light came on. From there, the car went right down the middle, and made a good pass."

In tomorrow morning's first round, Jones' will face No. 11 qualifier Jason Cannon.

"We've got Jason Cannon in the first round tomorrow," stated Jones. "It's at 9:15 a.m., so we're going to have some air in the morning. I'm just kind of glad we don't have an A/Fuel car. The air is going to be there, and we are sure the track is going to be there, so that gives us an opportunity to go out there and step it up. We're not going to go out there and kill it, because we don't want to beat ourselves. We are hoping to get it down there in the .40's."
