Tom Martino put together a solid qualifying performance at this weekend's U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Improving on almost every run, the CENTURY 21 Firebird Racing Team claimed the 10th qualifying position with an elapsed time of 7.010 seconds with a top speed of 195.85 mph, recorded during their final attempt on Sunday night. Almost as important as his qualifying effort was Martino's belief that the team had found a set-up from which they could race. "We made four nice car runs. The only pass that gave us a problem was this morning when we made some changes that the car absolutely didn't like. Other than that, the other runs on Friday and Saturday should have been good enough to put us well into the field. The only difference between those runs and tonight's was that we made a big engine tune-up change. We made the same run clutch-wise and car-wise, but we were just faster because of the tune-up.

"I think the CENTURY 21 Firebird is now significantly better than it ever has been. I think I have something we can really race. Now we have to concentrate on getting our power back to where it was, and we'll go back to being among the top qualifiers everywhere we go.

"But the most important part tonight is that we qualified for the U.S. Nationals, and now we have a chance to see what we can do during tomorrow's eliminations."
