Whisnant looking for his first win in Indy.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ^ÖThis weekend drag racers from all over the United States will converge on Indianapolis Raceway park for the 48th running of the Mac Tools US Nationals. Every racer that comes to IRP, comes here with a common dream: to stand in the winners circle Monday night.
Although Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet Cavalier, has made two final round appearances this season (Gainesville and Seattle), he has yet to win his first race. This weekend Whisnant wants to be that Pro Stock driver who will stand in the winner^Òs circle and take home the coveted US Nationals ^ÑWally^Ò.
"Winning here at the US Nationals would be a dream come true," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "This is the big one; this is the race everyone wants to win. There is so much drag racing history here at the US Nationals. This place is legendary. All the greats in this sport have won here at one time or another. It is the race that some racers spend their whole career trying to win, and never do. If you are going to win one, this would be the one to win.
Knowing that there will be over 50 Pro Stock car trying to qualify for Mondays race, Whisnant and his RW Performance team, went to IRP last week and spent two days testing and tuning their Chevrolet Cavalier in preparation for this race.
"We were very productive in testing last week. We tried a number of different things, and collected good data on the racetrack. I am confident that James (crew chief, James Reichard) and Julius (team engineer, Julius Hughes) will give me a great racecar to drive, but we will still need to be on our game to make the show. This weekend, I think just getting in the show will be a victory all by its self.
"Right now, we have a number of different sponsors looking very closely at our team. We need to do well here in Indy. A good finish here may make a big difference for this team next year, so we are prepared to give it all we have to qualify, and to race on Monday
"No one remembers who was the runner-up in Indy, but everybody remember who won. It would be nice to be remembered as the guy that one Indy in 2002."
Qualifying at the 48th Annual Mac Tools US Nationals will begin on Friday Aug. 30, continues on Saturday Aug. 31, and finishes on Sunday Sept. 1. Eliminations begin at 11:00 AM CST on Monday Sept. 2.
