CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 3, 2004) - Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 4 qualifying position Friday at Indianapolis Raceway Park after powering to a run of 4.608 seconds at 315.19 mph.

The two-time U.S. Nationals winner (1995, 2001) blasted his Dick LaHaie-tuned rail to the 4.608, 315.19 performance on his opening qualifying attempt at the 50th running of drag racing's premier event.

"It was a pretty nice run," Dixon said. "That's the best run we've made on 85-percent nitro(methane). It's only one run, but it appears we've gotten things corrected with our blower belt problems. We're solidly in the field and hopefully we can come out tomorrow night and improve our position."

The third winningest Top Fuel driver (35 wins) in NHRA history will look to move up the Top Fuel ladder when nitro qualifying continues with sessions at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday at I.R.P.

ESPN2 will televise one hour of qualifying highlights from the 50th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at 5 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Sept. 4, while ESPN will show two hours of qualifying coverage at 1 p.m. (ET) and ESPN2 will broadcast three hours of qualifying footage at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Sept. 5. ESPN2 will broadcast two hours of early final eliminations coverage at 11 a.m. (ET) on Monday, Sept. 6 and show three hours of final eliminations coverage at 7 p.m. (ET) later that night.
