WEICKGENANNT QUALIFIED 11th AFTER SECOND DAY OF QUALIFYING

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The second and third rounds of qualifying at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis were met with hot temperatures and difficult track conditions. Bob Weickgenannt and the Columbia, MD based B&B Racing fuel Funny Car team finished the day in the eleventh qualifying spot after making only one of the two passes.

In the first qualifying session, Weickgenannt ended his run at the 1000' mark on the track with a huge engine explosion that distorted the firewall on the car and blew the burst panel out of the body. The driver did a nice job of bringing the Variform, Velux and Tenneco sponsored entry to a stop where the NHRA Safety Safari arrived to assist. The explosion caused a fire in the car and, as he exited, Weickgenannt managed to get a lung full of smoke and spent a few minutes at the track hospital taking oxygen. Through it all, the car ran a 5.926 second elapsed time at 166.25 MPH.

The resultant damage to the car and body forced the team to spend their time putting things back together and they were not able to get ready in time for the second pass of the day. Racing continues Sunday with the two final qualifying sessions. Eliminations are scheduled for Monday.
