INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. John Force and Austin Coil, architects of the ultimate sports dynasty, are among the finalists for positions on the 35th annual Car Craft Magazine All-Star Drag Racing Team which will be revealed Thursday evening in ceremonies at the Downtown Marriott Hotel.
Force, winner of 11 NHRA championships in the last 12 seasons, and Coil, Co-Crew Chief on Force's national record-holding (4.731 seconds) Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, have been named to the last 11 All-Star teams by readers of Car Craft Magazine, National DRAGSTER and Drag Review as well as by members of a panel comprised of journalists, officials, manufacturers and retired drag racing champions.
Force, the POWERade points leader entering this week's 48th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park, is on a short list that also includes teammate Gary Densham, Del Worsham and Whit Bazemore.
Densham, driver of the Team Castrol/Automobile Club of Southern California Ford, is a finalist for the first time in his career.
Coil, along with Bernie Fedderly, his collaborator the last 10 seasons, again is a finalist in the Funny Car Crew Chief category along with Jimmy Prock, who has directed Densham to four victories the last 12 months, Chuck Worsham and Lee Beard (Bazemore).
Also on the list of All-Star finalists is Castrol North America, nominated in the Fuel Racing Sponsor category for its long-time support of Force and teammate Tony Pedregon, driver of the Castrol SYNTEC Ford.
Between them, the Castrol-backed Fords have won 10 of the 16 races contested thus far this season including four of the last five. Force, winner of a record 103 tour titles, enters this week's U.S. Nationals having reached the winners' circle in the two most recent events in the series at Sonoma, Calif., and Brainerd, Minn.
Force leads Pedregon by 140 points in the race for the $400,000 POWERade Champion's bonus. Densham is third, Worsham fourth and Bazemore fifth.
