CLERMONT, Ind. (August 31, 2004) -- Last year's No. 1 qualifier in Top Fuel, David Baca returns to the site of his first-ever top qualifying position, intent on claiming the top prize on every drag racer's agenda -- a "Wally" (winner's trophy) from the 50th anniversary edition of the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

"Just mention the name Mac Tools U.S. Nationals or simply say Indy to any drag racer and the reply will be, 'That's the one I want to win,'" said Baca, driver of the D. Baca & Family Top Fuel Dragster. "Well you know what; it's the one I want to win, too.

"My father, Dennis, who is an integral part of this team, won Top Fuel here in 1977 and he will be here for the 50th anniversary festivities. I want a trophy to match his and I want him to see me do it.

"Although this D. Baca & Family team is running a limited schedule, we feel we can run with the big dogs here at Indy. Crew chief Rick Henkelman has this hot rod running consistent and it take consistency, plus luck, to win races. I think we'll surprise a lot of people this coming weekend."

At last year's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Baca ran a career best elapsed time, a 4.499 second pass, and although he has only competed in 11 of 17 races this season, the Brentwood, Calif. driver, is No. 13 in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings.

The D. Baca & Family dragster, with David Baca at the wheel and Rick Henkelman calling the tuning shots, will begin their quest for the Top Fuel title at the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals when professional nitro qualifying starts on Friday evening (September 3) at Indianapolis Raceway Park with one session scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Qualifying continues with two sessions on Saturday (September 4) at 3 and 7:30 p.m. and ends Sunday (September 5) with the final two sessions at 12:45 and 4:10 p.m. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Monday, Labor Day, (September 6) at 11 a.m. These times are subject to change and reflect Eastern Standard Time (EST) -- (At this time of the year, EST is the same time as Central Daylight Time, CDT).

D. Baca & Family is pleased to be associated throughout the remainder of the 2004 season with marketing support from American Racing, Champion Spark Plugs, Don Steves Chevrolet (La Habra, Calif.), Goodyear, Lucas Oil and Mac Tools.
