FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, is No. 3 qualifier, 4.902/304.80.
CAPPS: "We have just been trying to get the Camaro to the way it ran at Brainerd. The guys were off a little bit on the clutch, and it wound up a little soft in the run last night. I knew it was just a matter of time. Everyone was confident the car would run good. I knew when I stepped on the throttle it was on a good run. It was smooth. It rattled the tires a little bit, I thought I would have to pedal it, but it didn't give me a chance, it cleared up. It wanted to move around, I tried to fight hard to keep it in the middle of the track, and it was a fine, clean, fun run. The track was a little greasy and it was just spinning the tires ever so slightly all the way down the course, so at that point you are fighting to keep it in the center of the track." ON THE SECOND '99 CAMARO BODY HERE: "Unfortunately, we burned up the only '99 Camaro we had in Brainerd. It wasn't too bad, we were able to have it repaired, and it showed up this morning. It's a backup to the gold one we're running here. We had a front half from Hairy Glass sent and a company here in Indianapois, Aerodyne, fixed it and attached the front end, and we had it repainted here in town. It's ready to go, if we need it. The die-cast of the gold Camaro has been out already, we didn't want to bring it out unless we were running good. This is our second '99 Camaro body. I'm excited about driving the car, it's a fun car to drive."
WHIT BAZEMORE, KENDALL OIL/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, is No. 4 qualifier, 4.908/312.06. He posted two of the quickest runs in the first thee qualifying sessions. His best effort was his 4.908-second e.t. from Friday night. In the heat of the day today he posted a 4.916-second run.
BAZEMORE: "It was outstanding to run that well in the heat. We obviously saw our sister Camaro with (Ron) Capps go out and run a .90, which was the best pass of the session. The track conditioins are so unlike yesterday, it was a completely different ballgame out there. For Tim and Kim (Richards, co-crew chiefs) and the Kendall Camaro team to put that kind of car under me in those conditions is really good."
PRO STOCK -- CAMARO Z28
KURT JOHNSON, ACDELCO CAMARO Z28, squeezed into the field in tonight's run with a 7.001-second pass at 198.15 mph, good enough for 15th.
MIKE EDWARDS, DEWCO SALES CAMARO Z28, is No. 10, 6.992/196.24.
TOM HAMMONDS, WINNEBAGO/MATCO TOOLS/KENDALL OIL CAMARO Z28, has not qualified, with two sessions remaining. He's 28th, 7.052/195.90.
PRO STOCK TRUCK -- CHEVY S-10
MARK OSBORNE, RCL COMPONENTS CHEVY S-10, qualified No. 1 for the second time this season, with a track record e.t. of 7.625 seconds at 176.67 mph.
OSBORNE: "It would mean a whole lot to the whole team to win this weekend, becaause we have three new guys. It would also mean a lot to see if Tim (Freeman, teammate) and I go into the final. For me, it's important for the points. And, there's nothing like winning the 45th Annual U.S. Natinals, especially from the No. 1 qualifying spot." WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO STAY AHEAD OF PANELLA IN POINTS: "I'm not counting out Brad Jeter (third in points) as far as the points are concerned. We need to be consistent, make sure we get to race every Sunday. I'm not saying Panella is the man to beat tomorrow. You can't count out Jeter, he's only 50 points behind. The Chevy S-10 is running good, we want it to be these two S-10s in the final tomorrow."
