WEICKGENANNT QUALIFIED 8th AFTER FIRST ROUND AT THE U.S. NATIONALS

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The first round of qualifying at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis was filled with tire-smoking, track-oiling runs. Bob Weickgenannt and the Columbia, MD based B&B Racing fuel Funny Car team managed to get their car down the track to an eighth-place qualifying spot with a 5.231 elapsed time at 235.72 miles per hour. Weickgenannt said he felt the car nose over and lose power at half track and he backed off the throttle, as the speed of only 235 MPH demonstrates. "When I felt it nose over, I got out of it and decided to save some equipment." Although not a tremendous pass for the Variform, Velux and Tenneco sponsored entry, it's one that puts them solidly in the hunt for a spot in eliminations. Qualifying continues with two passes on Saturday and two more on Sunday. Eliminations are scheduled for Monday.
