BAYTOWN, Texas - Federal Mogul Dragster driver Shelly Howard kept her Houston Raceway Park win streak alive by defeating Division 5 heavy hitter David Wells in the first round of this weekend's O'Reilly Nationals presented by Pennzoil just outside of Houston. Howard qualified No. 1 at the Division 4 race here earlier in the year, and used consistent 5.40's to make her way to the final before rain postponed the race.

Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., qualified No. 7 with a 5.462 elapsed time at 259.31 mph. She duplicated her qualifying time with another 5.462 at 258.76 mph to put away Wells' 5.549 at 257.73 mph.

"It was a good clean run," said Howard. "It wasn't a perfect run, but we didn't want to go out there and beat ourselves by being too aggressive. We knew Wells was going to be tough, so we certainly couldn't be conservative either. We won the round, so now we just have to get ready for eliminations tomorrow."

In round two, Howard will square off with four time World Champion Rick Santos. Santos has lane choice by virtue of his 5.39 in round one. Howard hopes to upset the Champ tomorrow.

"We know Santos is going to be tough, he always is," commented Howard. "Regardless of who we are running, we have to run our own race and do our jobs. We're going to try to step it up and give him a real run for his money."

Final eliminations in all categories will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com for round by round updates of the racing action from Baytown.
