FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: NHRA Communications (626) 914-4761 POST-RACE NOTES: MATCO TOOLS SUPERNATIONALS, OCT. 23-27, HOUSTON
TOP FUEL *Gary Scelzi only needs to make a qualifying attempt at the Winston Finals, Nov. 6-9 at Pomona, Calif., to clinch his first NHRA Winston championship in the Team Winston Dragster. Scelzi, a rookie from Fresno, Calif., leads second-place Cory McClenathan by 135 points. A driver earns 10 points for a qualifying attempt, which will give Scelzi a 145- point edge. McClenathan can earn no more than 138 points at this event.
FUNNY CAR *The three fastest speeds in NHRA Funny Car history were recorded by Chuck Etchells, Ron Capps and Tony Pedregon during qualifying for this event. Etchells was clocked at 315.56 mph in the Kendall Dodge Avenger, Capps at 315.45 in the Copenhagen Chevrolet Camaro and Pedregon at 315.34 in the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. None of the drivers could back up their speeds within 1 percent at this event for an NHRA national record, so the record remains 314.46 by John Force, set a week earlier at the Revell Nationals in Dallas.
PRO STOCK *Jeg Coughlin Jr. became the first driver in NHRA history to win in four racing categories during one season. Coughlin, from Columbus, Ohio, already has won this season in sportsman categories Competition, Super Stock and Super Gas. *Bruce Allen failed to qualify for the first time this season in the Slick 50 Pontiac Firebird, reaching only the 20th spot. Only four Pro Stock drivers have qualified for all 21 national events this season: NHRA Winston champion Jim Yates, Warren Johnson, Kurt Johnson and Steve Schmidt.
GENERAL *TNN will televise taped highlights of final eliminations from 1:30-2:30 p.m. (EST) Nov. 1. The originally scheduled live show Oct. 26 was canceled when eliminations were postponed by rain.
