LARRY DIXON PILOTS MILLER LITE TOP FUEL DRAGSTER TO NO. 2 QUALIFYING POSITION FRIDAY AT HOUSTON
DIXON POSTS TWO OF TOP THREE LAPS DURING FIRST DAY OF QUALIFYING
BAYTOWN, TX. (Oct. 29) - Larry Dixon posted two of the top three quickest runs at Houston Raceway Park on Friday as he drove the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster to the No. 2 qualifying position with his best lap of 4.576 seconds at 315.15 m.p.h. at the Third Annual Matco Tools SuperNationals.
Dixon began the first day of qualifying by claiming the pole position with a session-best pass of 4.603 seconds at 317.27 m.p.h. The No. 91 car then showed its consistency as it shaved nearly .03 of a second on its final lap to secure the second provisional position.
"We were actually trying to run a .54 or a .55 on our last run, but we are pretty happy with that pass," said Miller Lite Team Crew Chief Dick LaHaie.
Dixon has qualified the Miller Lite Dragster on the pole on three occasions this season (Gainesville, Houston, Dallas) and ranks fourth-best overall among top fuel drivers for the season-ending $100,000 exhibition shootout.
He has recorded one win in three final round appearances this season and also owns the national elapsed-time record as the first driver to break the 4.5-second barrier (4.486 seconds). Dixon has seven NHRA national event wins in 17 final round appearances and was the 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year.
