BAYTOWN, Tex- Federal Mogul Dragster points leader Jay Meyer lost to Billy Bybee on a holeshot in the second round of the O'Reilly Nationals presented by Pennzoil this weekend at Houston Raceway Park. Meyer ran quicker than Bybee with a 5.537/255.34, but Bybee was able to get to the finish line first by virtue of a .470 to .505 starting line advantage with his own 5.561/255.97. The margin of victory was .011 of a second, roughly 4 feet.
Meyer qualified no. 4 with a 5.514/252.90, and took out fellow local racer Lee Callaway in the first round before losing to Bybee in the second round.
Meyer said, "We shook all weekend. We found a clutch problem in that our pressure plate was warped. When we corrected the problem, it gave us more clutch than we thought, and we couldn't get a handle on it all weekend. We found a leaking seal in the rear end right before the second round. We didn't think that it would affect anything, but it evidentaly was leaking onto the breaks, because I had a hard time holding the car while I was staging. I had to put the clutch pedal all the way down on the pedal stop, which I normally don't do, which could be the cause why I was a little late on the line. Billy [Bybee] had a good run, and we just got beat."
Meyer's next race will be the fourth race of the Division 4 Series at State Capitol Dragway in Baton Rouge, La, April 28-30. Meyer will be looking to maintain his national points lead as well as get one step closer to clinching a Division 4 championship. Baton Rouge may present a challenge to the Freeport, Texas based team.
"We will just have to play it by ear. I haven't been there in four or five years," Meyer said. "I guess we will just put more wing in it, stand on it, and hold on."
