Whit Bazemore and the Kendall Motor Oil/Matco Tools Camaro Z28 Racing team battled to get a handle on the Houston Raceway Park surface during Friday's qualifying sessions for the Matco Tools SuperNationals. As a result, Bazemore found himself outside the top sixteen heading into the two remaining time trials on Saturday.

"Both Terry (crew chief Manzer) and I are a little frustrated, because we overpowered the track on each run. This afternoon, after we lost traction after about 1.5 seconds, we weren't too concerned. Unfortunately, that made us the first pair out in tonight's session, running immediately after the Pro Stock cars, and it normally takes a couple of cars running down the track to get the surface to where our cars can run. We're pretty sure that's what bit us tonight. Chuck (team owner Etchells) did say that the track looked better even after our one run. But we're not using any excuses.

"This Houston Raceway Park track has been tricky this weekend, and the air is good, which is giving a lot of guys problems. That's surprising because historically this track has been really good. But, this Etchells crew will be ready tomorrow. It's just a matter of finding the right tune-up for our Kendall/Matco Camaro. We have a new paint job this weekend, which is really hot, but apparently it's too hot for this track. We'll tone it down a little bit, get down the track and put our hot rod in the show."
