This Week in Ford Racing
Robert Hight, driver of the Auto Club/Los Angeles Dodgers Ford Mustang Funny Car, will head to the final event of the 2008 NHRA PowerAde Championship in third place, just 39 points behind leader Cruz Pedregon. Hight slashed 53 points from his championship deficit with a stellar weekend at Las Vegas; he qualified No. 1 overall and finished second, losing the championship run by .001 of a second. Hight has been the championship runner-up the last two seasons.
YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A FAMILIAR POSITION HEADING TO THE POMONA. THIS YEAR YOUR DEFICIT IS SMALLER THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS. "We were 92 points back and now it's attainable, you know, two rounds. We've had good luck at Pomona and I've won the last two races there. We are going to be just fine. My car ran great all weekend and we gained a lot more [points] than I thought we could in one race. We will just have to see what happens at Pomona."
THE ENTIRE JOHN FORCE RACING TEAM REALLY ELEVATED THEIR PERFORMANCE AT LAS VEGAS. WHAT HAS BEEN THE KEY TO HIS LATE SEASON SURGE? "Vegas was by far the best weekend for performance that my car has had all year. We can qualify No. 1 and throw a few good shots like we have all year. But as far as consistency and running down the track quickly every run, this is by far the best weekend that we have had. Last year I went to Pomona without a very realistic chance to win the championship, won the race and go within a round of winning the championship, and this year I only have to make up two rounds. And it doesn't get much better than that. I know we can do this and pull this off."
WHAT CAN YOU DRAW FROM COMING CLOSE TO WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE? "I have finished second the last two years in the points and I have a hunger to win this thing. I am tired of finishing second. It is like Carl Edwards said over in NASCAR; he wants to win, and that is where I am. This is my fourth year racing and I believe we have the team and I can drive this thing and that we can win this championship. I know that we can win this championship, so it's not any question, we've just got to get this done."
