Herbert Prepared for Return to Texas Motorplex
Cherryville, NC - It's been two years since Top Fuel Drag Racer Doug Herbert raced at the Texas Motorplex and he has missed the facility's superior traction. He hasn't missed the bad luck that the all-concrete track has dealt him and hopes to change it at the 10th Annual Chief Auto Parts Nationals in Ennis, TX on October 12-15.
Herbert has run a limited NHRA schedule in 1995 with only appearances at the Mopar Nationals in Englishtown, NJ and the Pioneer Keystone Nationals in Reading, PA. Herbert, the three-time and back-to-back IHRA Top Fuel World Champion, had troubles at the Keystone Nationals. His Snap-on team suffered engine problems on two qualifying attempts and smoked the tires on the last two runs.
"Thanks to Snap-on, we now have all the same parts as the other teams. The only thing we need is to get a few more laps under our belts and we'll be right with them again," said Herbert. "We learned a lot at the last race and should be able to apply it and more at the Motorplex."
Herbert, the second driver to run 300 mph, remembers an unlucky day at the facility south of Dallas. "My blow-over in 1992 is probably most my most memorable experience at the Motorplex," said the 27-year-old from Cherryville, NC.
"We qualified 7th with a 4.87 and had the car really hopped up to race Rance McDaniel in the first round. My car picked the front wheels up pretty comfortably, but then blew over so fast I just couldn't catch it. To make matters worse, we were a good ways ahead when it went over!"
Herbert was a top-ten finisher in the 1992 and 1993 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. He has one NHRA National Event victory, the Oldsmobile Springnationals in Columbus, OH.
