BRISTOL, Tenn., July 9, 2000 - Doug Herbert defeated Bob Gilbertson Saturday night in the first round of the Winston Showdown special race at Bristol Dragway, but he couldn't do it Sunday in Round 2 of the unique event that pits Top Fuel drivers against Funny Car drivers.
The unique formula placed the two quickest losing Funny Cars from the first round into the second and, as fate would have it, Gilbertson's Camaro Funny Car was paired against Herbert's Snap-on Top Fuel dragster again.
"I don't know . . . we started shaking the tires early then the engine just dropped cylinders on the run and we smoked the tires," said Herbert. "We are still trying to sort out the combination since we made changes to the fuel system."
Herbert did have a good outing, qualifying third with a 4.721 at 304.53 mph best as the top 12 dragsters squared off against the top 12 in Funny Car.
Herbert won with a 4.863 at 295.08 while Gilbertson trailed with a 5.210 at 272.83. In Sunday's match, Gilbertson's 5.265 at 272.34 was good enough to oust Herbert's 7.773 at 104.96.
Herbert and the Snap-on Racing team head for Denver, site of this weekend's - Friday through Sunday - Mile-High Nationals.
