Chad Head will be driving his family-owned Head Racing Toyota Camry Funny Car tuned by his father.
POMONA, Calif. – Starting his sophomore season, Funny Car racer Chad Head is proud to be tossing his yellow bumper stripe aside and is gearing up for the start of the NHRA Mello Yello season, beginning with the 54th annual Circle K Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona on Feb. 6-9.
Head of Westerville, Ohio, will be driving his family-owned Head Racing Toyota Camry Funny Car tuned by his father, Jim and between the two are looking forward to posting some impressive elapsed times in 2014.
Head went to two final rounds in his rookie season (Charlotte and Reading) and getting that close to winning has him hoping that a great tune up and some positive traction will get him into the coveted winner’s circle.
“At last year’s finals at Pomona, we qualified No. 7 with a 4.06 time and felt competitive going into race day,” stated Head. “After going to two finals gives us a clear indication that our team can compete with the best of them. We know consistency is the only way to stay competitive.”
Head Racing started 2013 at the Gatornationals, but this year decided to add Pomona and Phoenix on their schedule and will compete in 19 of the 24 races.
“We want to present our team in an aggressive fashion with great runs in hopes that we can attract a sponsor to run the entire schedule and run for the championship,” said Head. “With the right sponsorship, we could easily be in the mix for the Countdown and we’ll keep trying to improve on every run in trying to win ever round.”
After a recent bout with the flu, he fortunately survived and in the process reached his goal of 199.9 lbs before testing to satisfy his car owner father, Jim who offered up a financial incentive to his driver to lose 20 lbs.
Head took advantage of his last weekend off being invited by his good friend Mike Oles to go snowmobiling in the U-P area of Michigan.
“Snowmobiling is a good way to relax and it’s something I love to do and hardly can find the time,” smiled Head. “Over the two days we covered around 250 miles and although it was five degrees, it was still beautiful country,” said Head. “Now, just can’t wait to get the season started.”
Qualifying begins on Friday, February 7 at 1:00 p.m. PST followed by the second session at 4:00 p.m. Saturday’s nitro qualifying starts at 1:00 p.m. followed by a second session later in the day at 4:00 p.m. in setting the field for Sunday’s race.
