HALLSVILLE, Texas - The sport of drag racing can have it's highs and lows, and Federal Mogul Dragster driver Shelly Howard experienced that lesson at this past weekend's NHRA Division 4 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event in Hallsville, Texas. Howard came into the event hot off a win in Memphis, and with the Division 4 points lead, but lost in the first round in Hallsville when she exploded the engine's burst panels during the burnout.
The Tulsa, Okla., racer qualified her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster No. 2 with an elapsed time of 5.600 seconds at 252.19 mph, just .001 of a second off the No. 1 spot. Her first round opponent, and eventual runner-up Karl Brounkowski ran a 6.27 at 204 on his single. Brounkowski also received a single in the semi's when his opponent could not make the call.
"At Hallsville, you have to go downhill from the staging lanes to the burnout box," said Howard. "We think while we were sitting on that incline waiting for Karl to start his A/Fuel car, it made an air pocket in the fuel system, which in turn caused an extreme lean fuel condition when I hit the throttle for the burnout. It exploded the burst panels and we were through."
Even with the first round loss, Howard maintained her points lead when Troy Buff, who is No. 2 in Division 4 points, lost to the 2000 Champion Jay Meyer in the semifinals. Meyer went on to win the event, and Howard's points lead was reduced from 31 points to 20 following this event.
"We just have to put it behind us," commented Howard. "It is really disappointing any time you lose like that, especially since we would have had a bye to the final if we won. We still have the points lead, and if we can do well at two out of division race to make up for our two first round losses, we should be ok. With the points this close, it is definitely going to be close."
The next event for the Howard Racing Team will be the Division 5 opener at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. Stay tuned to Howard's award winning website www.ShellyHoward.com for more news from the team.
