Hagan hopes for repeat last fall's Winner's Circle at Pomona

Hagan's best qualifying pass of 4.077 seconds at 316 mph came in the first session on Friday.

Matt Hagan is hoping to improve his 2014 performances at Pomona, Calif., when Sunday's eliminations begin at the NHRA Circle K Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway.

Through four qualifying runs at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season opener, the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Funny Car is two-for-four. While that's a .500 batting average, it isn't enough to satisfy Hagan.

"We've went down the track two out of four times, that's more than some guys did," Hagan said. "We definitely have some room to improve. We have to iron out a few bugs here and there.

"We're running a brand new chassis and stuff but so far, so good. We're qualified. There's a lot of cars here," Hagan said of 21 cars that fought for the 16-car field.

Hagan's best qualifying pass of 4.077 seconds at 316 mph came in the first session on Friday. He was unable to make full pulls in the second and fourth sessions in cooler temperatures.

The Dickie Venables led team followed up their 4.077-second pass with a 4.094-second during Saturday's first session.

"Last time we were at this track we came away with the win but we were missing Dickie (who was recovering from surgery). We'd love nothing more than to redo that Winner's Circle and have him in it.

"Sunday is when it really matters. We just have to step up to the plate and knock it out of the park."
