NHRA SPORTSMAN RACERS: GOODYEAR KEY TO SONOMA SUCCESS

SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2006) -- The successful drivers in the National Hot Rod Association's Lucas Oil Sportsman drag racing series drove on Goodyear tires during the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway.

Drivers racing on the wings of Goodyear won five of the six Sportsman categories at Infineon and filled nearly all the berths in the final rounds. In fact, cars using Goodyear tires filled most of the berths in the semi-final rounds.

Brad Rounds was the winner in Super Stock, Mike Blodgett won in Super Gas and Glen Treadwell was the Competition Eliminator winner. Morgan Lucas, the POWERade Drag Racing Series Top Fuel driver, won in Top Alcohol Dragster and Clint Thompson won in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Rounds, of Reno, Nev., drove a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 and used a pair of Goodyear Eagle D1911 rear drive tires on the back of the truck. The victory at Infineon was his first national victory. An engineer by trade, Rounds has been racing for six seasons.

Frank Grossi, who was the runner-up to Rounds, raced on a pair of Goodyear D6894 radial tires. The D6894 is new to Goodyear's line of Super Stock tires and is available for purchase.

Blodgett, the 62-year-old from Torrance, Calif., collected his first national victory, but the trophy he collected is the 15th in the family. His son Michael has won 14 times. The elder Blodgett collected his initial national win while driving a 1927 Ford Roadster. The car had a pair of Goodyear D1407 drive tires on the back.

"We really appreciate the help we get from Goodyear," the elder Blodgett said. "We couldn't do this without Goodyear's help."

Treadwell made the trip from Sorrento, Fla. to win his seventh national victory and said, "We just like it out here. It's a vacation." He drove a 1923 Ford equipped with a set of Goodyear D2210 tires. Three of the four cars to reach the semi-final round in Competition Eliminator used Goodyear tires.

Clint Thompson won his second national race in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo and endorsed Goodyear's D1022 drive tire. He said, "It's awesome. I was one of the first Top Alcohol Funny Car drivers to use it. I love it."

Thompson, whose previous national win was at Pacific Raceways in Seattle in 2005, said of Goodyear's success at Infineon, "It says Goodyear makes the best racing tires. No question about that."

There was no question about which tiremaker was the most successful in TAFC. Six of the eight cars to reach the second round raced on Goodyear tires and all of the semifinalists used Goodyears.

Lucas drove his TAD car for only the second time this season. He said, "Drag racing is meant to be fun. That's why we do this. I wanted to get back to that."

The Lucas Dragster used a set of Goodyear D1230 rear tires. Six of the eight cars reaching the quarterfinal round used Goodyear tires and cars using Goodyears exclusively filled the semi-final round.
