WHITELEY, NABER TAKE SPORTSMAN WINS WITH GOODYEAR
SONOMA, Calif. (July 28, 2008) -- Goodyear's industry-best five wins at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway included two wins in the Lucas Oil Sportsman categories. No tiremaker did better in the Sportsman categories.
Jim Whiteley (Grand Junction, Colo.) won in Top Alcohol Dragster and Robert Naber (Ontario, Calif.) was the winner in Super Gas. Dean Carter advanced to the final round in Competition Eliminator, giving Goodyear four cars in a final round in the five Sportsman classes.
Whiteley's victory was his third national win. The 45-year-old businessman has been drag racing for 15 years, but only the last three seasons have been in the TAD ranks.
Whiteley's dragster won at Infineon on a set of Goodyear D1022 rear drive tires that made their 10th pass in the final round. He beat Mark Niver in the final round. The four cars that advanced to the final round in TAD rode on Goodyear tires and seven of the eight cars that made it to the second round used Goodyear rubber.
"The tires have been real good," Whiteley said. "Everything worked phenomenally well this weekend."
Naber collected his second national victory using a pair of Goodyear D2053 rear drive tires. He said the tires had been used on 30 passes.
"They brought the reaction time (faster) because it has a stiffer sidewall," Naber said of the D2053. "They made my reaction time a hundredth (of a second) faster."
Naber said he has spent most of his nine-year drag racing career on Goodyear tires. He drove a Chevrolet S-10 truck to the win at Infineon.
"These tires were hooked up the whole time," Naber said. "We never had a problem. If you have a problem in this class, you can't win."
