New Goodyear drive tire developed for NHRA Top Fuel, Funny Car classes.

AKRON, Ohio (May 20, 2002)-- Goodyear's latest offering in the continuing evolution of drag racing drive tires for the top classes of the National Hot Rod Association will be used in competition for the first time in a few weeks, the tiremaker announced.

The D1486 rear tire will be introduced for the Top Fuel and Funny Car classes during the May 30-June 2 Chicagoland Dodge Dealers NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Speedway in Joliet, Ill.

Goodyear is the exclusive tire supplier for the Top Fuel and Funny Car classes.

"The D1486 will show more consistent performance at the starting line," said Carolyn Ashbee, marketing manager, drag racing.

The new tire is cured in the same mold as the previous tire and has the same dimensions but, at 49 pounds, is nearly two pounds heavier. In testing performed by four Funny Car teams at the Atlanta Dragway, the D1486 was found to have superior performance characteristics under hot track conditions when compared to the previous tire.

The crew chiefs for the cars involved in the test (driven by Scotty Cannon, Bob Gilbertson, Ron Capps and Gary Densham) said computer data from the test also indicated the new tire benefits the cars mechanically as well.

The D1430 was developed during the 2001 campaign to handle racing technology that now allows cars in the NHRA's two most powerful classes to routinely achieve speeds above 330 mph. The new D1486 includes that same technology.

In 2001, Top Fuel ace Kenny Bernstein set a world elapsed time record (4.477 seconds) on the D1430. Ironically, he did so at Route 66 Speedway.
