GOODYEAR-SHOD CARS WIN EIGHT TIMES AT NHRA JOLIET RACE
JOLIET, Ill. (June 7, 2009) -- Spencer Massey enhanced his case for winning the NHRA's top rookie award when he won the Top Fuel final in the United Association Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.
Massey, driving for drag racing legend Don Prudhomme, beat Antron Brown in the final round to claim his first Full Throttle Drag Racing Series victory.
Four other drivers used Goodyear tires to win their category at the event. They included Tony Pedregon (in Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock), Adam Davis (Stock Eliminator) and Jim Whiteley (Top Alcohol Dragster).
Goodyear-shod cars won three more times in the Jeg's AllStars, a special event for the NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsman racers. Bill Reichert won in Top Alcohol Dragster, Bruno Massel was the Competition Eliminator winner and Ben Wenzel took the Stock Eliminator win.
"We couldn't be more pleased with the performance of our Goodyear Eagles at Route 66 Raceway," said Carolyn Ashbee, Goodyear's sales account manager for drag racing. "From the nitro ranks all the way through the sportsman and Jeg's AllStar races, they have performed flawlessly at one of the most demanding drag strips on the NHRA circuit."
The weekend was clouded by changing weather conditions. Two days were slowed by rain and the sun was never a serious factor in terms of the track conditions.
Massey said, "It was a matter of time before we got in the Winner's Circle."
Maybe, but Brown was the top qualifier and had the quickest elapsed time (3.826 seconds) and best speed (317.94 mph) of the weekend.
Pedregon's victory came at the expense of crowd favorite Ashley Force Hood and was his first win in 17 races. Pedregon was the defending event champion and is now second in the championship standings.
Coughlin won for the fourth time at Route 66. Sunday's win padded his lead in the standings.
Davis' victory was the fourth national win of his career and his second in as many weeks. Whiteley, who piloted a supercharged car at Joliet, also won the previous national event.
