AKRON, Ohio (Oct. 8, 2003) -- You don't have to tell drag racer Ricky Ray that Goodyear's D1662 rear drive tire is an excellent tire. He'll tell you

Ray and his 1998 Pontiac Firebird won the Super Stock title in the Back to the Bend National Hot Rod Association divisional race at SRCA Dragstrip in Great Bend, Kansas on the D1662 in August. He used a pass of 9.448 seconds and 143.89 miles per hour to knock off Jason Novacek in the final round.

"I'm just tickled pink," Ray said. "The track temperature was 125 or 130 degrees on race day. (The D 1662) made driving the car easier."

The D1662 measures 32X14.5-15. It includes Goodyear's D-4A tread compound, one of the most robust compounds in Goodyear's inventory. It has a tread width of 14.4 inches and weighs 32 pounds.

Ray, who lives in Savannah, Missouri, converted to Goodyear racing tires at the start of the 2003 season and has been very happy he made the change.

"I'm having the best season I've ever had," he said. "I attribute that to the Goodyear tires I've had this year. They were more consistent, even on a bad track. In Kansas, at times, the track temperature was 140 degrees. It was horrible. There were very few cars able to get down the track."

Ray has been getting down the track quickly all season. He is among the top contenders to win the Division 5 Super Stock title and has been among the top 20 in the nation much of the year.

The Firebird competes in the Super Stock B/S class. It has a 323 cubic inch engine capable of sending him down the track in 8.9 seconds and reaching 150 mph.

Ray is a second-generation racer. His father, Billy, won the 1975 Super Stock in the American Hot Rod Association. The elder Ray has retired from racing but is the crew chief on the younger Ray's car.

Ricky Ray and his wife Dawn have two children, Christian (8 years old) and Grace (3).
