Payne and Finke Claim Victory in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, FL. --Eliminations are complete from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series being held this weekend from Gainesville Raceway. Top Alcohol Dragster Pilot John Finke from Selkirk, N.Y., took home the goods while Top Alcohol Funny Car veteran Jay Payne of Claremont, Calif., accomplished the same feat.

Finke ran a 5.484 second run at 262.23mph in the finals defeating the number two qualifier Spencer Massey from Fort Worth, Texas who fouled. Payne went up against Chesterfield, N.J., resident Frank Schuster in the finals and ran a time of 5.670 seconds taking the victory.

In Comp Eliminator, Frank Cervelli of Mt. Holly, N.C., took home the hardware with a pass at 7.047 seconds at 189.12 mph. W Palm Beach, Fla., resident Bill Empke took victory in the Top Dragster class by defeating Jeff Burnett of Orlando, Fla. In Top Sportsman Ed Stuart from Pensacola, Fla., drove his '04 Cavalier to a time of 7.674 seconds which was good enough to beat Jim Carlton of Bradenton, Fla.

Mike Ruff, of Orlando, Fla., fell one step short of victory when he lost in the finals of Super Gas to Chuck Rothermel of Kinderhook, N.Y. In Super Comp Kyle Cultrera from Eliot, Maine, took victory with a top speed of 175.82. Anthony Bertozzi from Ashland, Va., drove his '69 Camaro past Gary Richard of Bay Shore, N.Y., who was also driving a '69 Camaro. Palmetto, Fla., resident Joe Skala achieved victory in Super Street while Anthony Bertozzi of Ashland, Va. accomplished the same feat in Super Stock.
