U.S. ARMY RACING TEAMMATES QUALIFY FIRST, SECOND
GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 13, 2010 - U.S. Army Racing Top Fuel teammates, Antron Brown and Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, took the top two spots here today after final qualifying for Sunday's 41st annual Tire Kingdom Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. Brown, who drives the Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster, just edged out Schumacher for the pole position during the last qualifying session with a track record 3.803-second pass at 321.05 mph.
Schumacher, aboard his championship-winning U.S. Army dragster, recorded a 3.805- second run at 321.12 mph to drop in right behind his good buddy.
"I'm sorry to rise up and take it away from Tony right there at the end," said Brown, who is stepping back into the cockpit for the first time since a fiery crash in Phoenix three weeks ago.
"But, no matter what, this is still for our Army Strong Soldiers."
"It would've been cool to get our second straight pole, but it's also nice to see Antron do well given what he went through a few weeks ago," offered Schumacher. "Hopefully, he has a comfort zone once again."
Brown, who banked his 22nd career pole, will take on 16th-place qualifier, Todd Paton, in the opening round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. Schumacher is slated to confront 15th- place qualifier, Terry McMillen.
Heading into the third race of the year, Schumacher held down fourth place in the standings, while Brown sat in ninth. Both are hoping for get well race days.
"We would certainly welcome the opportunity to go for the win tomorrow," said Schumacher. "We're still early in the season, but you want to start building some momentum sooner rather than later."
