SCHUMACHER NAILS FIFTH STARTING SPOT

GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 15 - U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher grabbed the fifth starting spot here Saturday for tomorrow's ACDelco Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

Schumacher, who is the defending ACDelco Gatornationals champion, posted a 4.579-second run at 326.56 mph in the final qualifying session to set up a first round meeting with 12th-place qualifier J.R. Todd.

"With only two sessions (Friday's were cancelled due to rain) we had to make sure we got comfortably in the show," said Schumacher. "We couldn't get too crazy today or otherwise we could have found ourselves on the outside looking in." On Sunday, the Chicago native will be shooting for his second victory of the season. He entered the weekend holding a one-point lead over Larry Dixon in the standings.

"Our focus right now is on J.R. Todd and only J.R. Todd," he added. "He and his team are always tough, so we better have our game faces on when we get up to the starting line. As always, I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead." Schumacher is attempting to secure his third career Gatornationals title, which would make him just the fourth Top Fuel pilot to accomplish that feat.

"I'm certainly hoping that we'll be in a position late tomorrow afternoon to do just that," he said. "Again, our only concern at the moment is J.R. Todd. We're not going to get caught looking beyond round one, I will guarantee you that."
