Tony Pedregon Looks To Close Deal In Gainesville
Gainesville, Fla., March 15, 2004 -- Only two races have been completed on the NHRA POWERade series tour, and defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon has already made some noise with his Quaker State Chevrolet Camaro.
Pedregon, entering his first season as team owner and driver, impressed everyone with his first final round appearance of the season in Phoenix. If that wasn't enough he also earned his 300th career round win and then scored his 300th Funny Car round win all in the same weekend.
"The numbers are nice and I can't believe that I've hit the 300 mark but the goal is to try and win races, and we almost did that in Phoenix," said Pedregon. "We knew we had the car, the team and the power to get there, we just didn't know when it would happen."
This weekend the Quaker State Racing team heads to Gainesville for the NHRA GatorNationals on March 18-21. Pedregon won the event in 2002 and last season he qualified on the pole and set low elapsed time of the event.
"Gainesville is a great facility and I've had some success there. I hope we can take the momentum from Phoenix and apply it this weekend and get a win out of it."
Pedregon is currently fourth in the NHRA POWERade Funny Car points standings.
There will be two rounds of qualifying on Friday, March 19, at 12:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. with two more scheduled for Saturday, March 20, at 12:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Final eliminations will be on Sunday, March 21, beginning at 11 a.m.
Qualifying coverage of the NHRA Gatornationals can be seen on March 21st from 2:30 a.m. -- 4:30 a.m. on ESPN2. Final eliminations can be seen on March 22nd from 11:30 p.m. -- 1:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
