JOHNSON JR. FINISHES IN NO. 13 SPOT AT GAINESVILLE

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 18, 2006) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 13 qualifying position on Saturday at Gainesville Raceway after recording a qualifying-best performance of 4.866-seconds.

Johnson made his best qualifying pass of the weekend on Friday's second attempt when his Monte Carlo stopped the Gainesville Raceway timers in 4.866 seconds at 322.58 mph. On Saturday, the Skoal Racing team struggled to adapt to the new 2420 Goodyear tire losing traction on both qualifying efforts.

"We came out on Friday and made two nice passes," Johnson said. "They were a bit on the safe side, so we wanted to try a few things today with the new tire and see how it reacted. Now, we can go back to the nice, conservative race day setup on Sunday."

For the second straight race, Johnson will battle Robert Hight in the first round of Funny Car eliminations. Hight finished fourth in the 16-car Funny Car order this weekend. Three weeks ago, Johnson defeated Hight en route to claiming his seventh career NHRA victory.
