Johnson Jr. Races To No. 12 Spot On Friday At Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car to the No. 12 qualifying spot Friday at Gainesville Raceway during the opening round of qualifying for the 35th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals.

Johnson powered his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned flopper to a run of 6.449 seconds at 136.26 mph on Friday's first qualifying attempt. The car lost traction near half-track on the weekend's opening pass.

On Friday's final attempt, the Iowa native drove his Snake Racing Funny Car to a performance of 5.151 at 244.96, good enough to claim the No. 12 qualifying position. There are 18 Funny Cars attempting to make the 16-car field on Sunday.

"Despite the tracks best attempt to defeat us today, it didn't," Johnson Jr. said. "We didn't win, but we're in the show. It's a very tricky race track and we figured out what it's going to take to get down this track.

"I shut off early on the second run. Until we get a little more confidence on this new tune-up with the setback blower where the engine won't hurt itself when the car spins the tires, I don't have a problem lifting early. We'll be all right on Saturday. The track is getting better as more runs are made, which will allow us to be more aggressive on Saturday."

Johnson looks to improve upon his No. 12 qualifying position when professional qualifying continues at noon and 3:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, March 20.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Mac Tools Gatornationals beginning at 2:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21 and show two hours of final eliminations at 11:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21.
