Gainesville, FL - In a landmark day for the National Hot Rod Association, Lyman, South Carolina, Pro Modified driver Alan Pittman, driving Ken Westbrook's supercharged '41 Willys, wrote his name at the top of a new page in the venerable sanctioning body's record books.

The event was the first of five Pro Mod exhibitions being held at NHRA national events this season, and Pittman, along with a bunch of his IHRA friends, treated the capacity 34th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals crowd to some outrageous, fast doorslammer action.

"Weather conditions in the wake of an overnight rain were marginal during the first round," said the professional chassis builder, "and on top of that, we had an on-board computer failure during the run, so my crew chief Darren Mayer had to tune by intuition for the afternoon session." Apparently Mayer's intuitions are pretty well developed, as Pittman stormed to an outstanding 6.263-second pass at 223.80 mph to lead the 16 cars trying for a spot in the 8-car field. "After the first round, and all our problems, our chances at making the show looked pretty slim," said Pittman "To end up as low qualifier is just great."
