Whisnant exits in Round 2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Chevrolet Cavalier, entered today's 34th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals in the 11th position on the Pro Stock eliminations ladder.

"We are going for it," said Whisnant. "This is the first round of eliminations we have seen this year and I feel pretty confident that it won't be the last.

"Today the name of the game will be consistency. The car that will win here today will be the car that can be consistent from lane to lane. So far this weekend this RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Cavalier has run the same numbers in either lane, and didn't fall off much when it became hot yesterday. I believe if we can have that same consistency here today, we could possibly come out on top today."

In Round 1 Whisnant met the Number 6 Pro Stock qualifier V. Gaines.

Whisnant took his first round win of the year at the starting line. Whisnant's .043 light put him out in front of Gaines at the hit, and even though Gaines had a quicker ET, Whisnant's starting line advantage kept him out ahead of Gaines to take the win. Whisnant ran a 6.851 / 200.17 mph to defeat Gaines' 6.845 / 201.61 mph.

Whisnant's opponent in Round 2 was fellow Georgian Kurt Johnson. When the lights went green, Whisnant was out of the gate first, but his starting line advantage was not enough to take the win. Johnson ran a 6.838 / 202.56 mph to defeat Whisnant with a 6.868 / 200.40 mph.

"We didn't go to the final, but this is still a good race for us. Our performance here this weekend has taken a huge monkey off our backs. We only went a couple rounds, but these two rounds has given everyone on this team a boost of confidence.

"We tested well in Las Vegas. Hopefully we can to use the momentum we have gathered here, to carry us farther in Vegas. Possibly all the way to the final round."

The next event on 2003 POWERade Drag Racing series will be the 4th annual Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals April 3-6 in Las Vegas, Nev.
