The reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion started race day from the No. 13 qualifying position.
In the opening round Jeg and his yellow and black JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier faced off against Terry Adams. Lane choice went to Adams, who made a last minute decision to move to the left lane.
Both cars carefully staged and took their time. Terry Adams turned the red light on and the win automatically went to Jeg. The JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier posted an impressive 6.815 at 201.74 mph. The run was good enough for lane choice in the second round.
"Winning the first round always sets the tone," said Jeg.
In the second round Jeg went head-to-head against Scott Geoffrion. The match up pitted a Chevy Cavalier against the new Ford Escort.
The JEG'S machine launched from the starting line first and never looked back. Jeg had a reaction time of .014 to the .043 of Geoffrion. The win light came on for Coughlin by .0818 seconds at the stripe. Jeg ran a 6.839 at 201.38 mph and got lane choice for the semifinal round.
"We are making good decisions as a group," explained Jeg. "Our goal is to keep lane choice and continue to fine tune this JEG'S Mail Order Chevy Cavalier all the way to the winner's circle."
The semifinal round pairing put Jeg and Allen Johnson into the ring. In one corner sat a Chevy Cavalier and in the other a Dodge Neon.
Once again, Jeg left the starting line first. This time the spread was .009 seconds. Jeg won by .0323 seconds at the stripe. He ran a quicker 6.850 at 200.66 mph.
"We slowed up a little in the semifinal round and that got us scratching our heads a little," noted Jeg.
The final round put Jeg and Kurt Johnson head-to-head. Lane choice went to KJ. Jeg grabbed the advantage off of the line b y .001 seconds. The two Chevy Cavaliers were door-handle-to-door-handle all the way down the track.
The win light came on in the other lane. Jeg ran a 6.840 at 201.29 mph. The margin of victory at the stripe was .0140 seconds.
"We were close this weekend and there is only one guy who did better," said Jeg. "Mac Tools put on another great race for the fans and it was fun to be a part of the excitement. We made some noise this weekend and now we will head back to the shop and focus on be a threat in Las Vegas."
This final round appearance was the 43rd of his professional career and the twelfth runner-up finish by the 32-year old second generation driver.
Jeg moved up one position in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock championship points to the No. 5 spot. He has 198 points. Troy fell to the No. 8 position and has 135 points.
