Semifinal round appearance moves Baca into top ten in points.

GAINESVILLE, Fla.. (March 16, 2003) -- David Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports/American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/YP.Net Top Fuel Dragster, notched his first round win as a professional driver in the opening round of the 34th annual NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals, the third of 23 events on the 2003 NHRA POWERade (r) Drag Racing Series.

Matched against Clay Millican in the opening round, Baca from Brentwood, Calif., took the win light by .037 seconds. This is Baca's fifth race as a Top Fuel driver. He ran the final two events of the 2002 season and the two previous races prior to the Mac Tools Gatornationals.

"Awesome! Awesome!" said Baca. "It great for me and the American Racing/Waterloo team to get this first win. Now we can concentrate on racing. I'll continue to try to get this car to the other end. I know I'm looking forward to the second round."

After the win over Millican, Baca advanced to the semifinals before a loss to John Smith, from Williamston, S.C., ended his day. En route to the semis, Baca defeated Doug Herbert, from Cherryville, N.C., in the quarterfinals.

On reaching the semifinals, Baca had the following thoughts: "This old hot rod wants to go. Our crew chief Johnny West just had to figure out what it (the car) needed. I'm excited that we rebounded the way we did and what we accomplished today. On the other hand, I'm a little upset that we didn't go to the finals. Taking nothing away from John Smith, this American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/YP.Net Top Fuel Dragster was certainly capable of going to the final round. I has to pedal and that's something that's new to me. If I was a little quicker on the pedal, things might have been different. Of course, that's only second guessing everything. The most exciting thing is that we're back in the top ten in the POWERade points."

Baca now has 136 points and holds ninth place in the Top Fuel point standings after three of 23 events.

The next race for Baca and the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports/American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/YP.Net Top Fuel Dragster is the fourth annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals. The event at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, in the world's most famous gaming mecca, unfolds April 3-6.
