DETROIT (January 31, 2000) - Fred Simmonds has been named marketing manager of drag racing at GM Racing and will oversee the company's on-site marketing activities at NHRA national events. Simmonds has been motorsports manager at Pontiac-GMC since December 1997. Sue Seaglund, Chevrolet's NHRA marketing manager from 1998-99, will continue to oversee other GM Racing programs, including the Craftsman Truck Series, NASCAR Busch series and American Speed Association. "I've enjoyed my association with the teams and drivers from Pontiac and look forward to my additional involvement with the teams at Chevrolet," Simmonds said. "General Motors has a tremendous amount of brand equity in NHRA drag racing with the Firebird, Camaro, S-10 and Sonoma. As always, our goal in 2000 is to win on the racetrack with the competitive programs we have in place and to maximize the exposure and sale of GM vehicles through our dealers. The National Hot Rod Association provides an excellent venue for reaching our target audience and we are proud of our continued partnership with their organization." Simmonds, a former United States Army captain, began his career at Pontiac-GMC in 1977 as district service manager in the Jacksonville, Fla., zone. His success there led to assignments in Montgomery, Ala., and Tampa, Fla. In 1982, he was promoted to marketing specialist and was responsible for short-term product planning, coordinating numerous research products. In 1984, Simmonds was assigned to the Memphis zone as office manager/car distributor, and in 1987 he became manager of focused marketing. In 1989, he began a seven-year tenure as assistant zone manager for the Orlando Zone before becoming manager of Pontiac's Dealer Business Center in 1996. Simmonds has a bachelor's degree from the University of Puget Sound and a master's degree from Florida Institute of Technology.
