ENGLISHTOWN NJ - SUMMIT FastNews - Welcome to the Matco Tools "No Fuel" Nationals. Get ready for the Matco Tools "All Fuel" Nationals.
Continued cold temperatures, thought to be a factor in a series of tire problems, led NHRA officials to make an unprecedented decision Sunday morning. Weather permitting, the event will continue today, but without Top Fuel and Funny Car.
The bottom line? Safety. The racing surface had now been cold-soaking for three days and the jet driers merely warm the surface of the track for a few minutes. It's going to take a day or two of sunshine to warm the underlying track layers enough for safe racing with the high-powered fuel cars.
Top Fuel and Funny Car competitors will return here between Indy and Reading, September 8-9 (Friday-Saturday), with time trials Friday and eliminations Saturday. Both fields are set based on the two qualifying sessions already completed, so only the teams already qualified need make the return trip in September. Both days will probably feature afternoon and early evening sessions, though the exact daily schedule is still uncertain.
Should weather prevent us from completing most of the non-fuel eliminations rounds today, it is likely that the remaining cars will also return in September to finish the event. The current plan, however, is to finish this event today for all but the fuel cars.
The September date was chosen to minimize team travel, with the next scheduled event, Reading, Penn., an easy half-day's drive from Englishtown. It is also one of the few open dates on the busy Old Bridge Township Raceway Park schedule.
Tickets and ticket stubs for today's scheduled final eliminations will be honored when the postponed eliminations are run on Saturday, September 9.
Sunday got off to a confusing start at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, the weather once again not synchronized with the published schedule. For the third consecutive day it was cloudy, wet, and chilly, with a predicted high temperature in the mid-fifties.
The second round of Stock Eliminator began at 11:15 am, an hour behind schedule, then came to a screeching halt at 11:30 when a light rain started falling. Track drying started again at noon and racing resumed at 12:15, but the weather radar shows more weather headed this way later today.
Stay tuned, we'll eventually get all of this sorted out.
