SCHUMACHER NINTH AFTER DAY ONE

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J., June 20 - Directing his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster,

Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher settled into the ninth qualifying spot here Friday after the opening day of qualifying for the Lucas Oil SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

The defending NHRA POWERade world champion put up a 4.582-second pass at 320.36 mph in the first session of the day and thus just missed making the top half of the field.

"We had a pretty good day here in New Jersey," said Schumacher. "Given our past at Raceway Park, we definitely need to get loads of data so we can turn things around for race day."

The Chicago-area resident has yet to claim a victory in the Garden State. Since 2003, he has a DNQ, a second round loss and three first round losses to his credit.

"We're determined to break through this weekend," he added. "Like I said during the week, I'm a believer that the percentages are bound to turn in our favor. Of course, saying it and doing it are two different things. We've got to go out and perform, plain and simple."

Schumacher and his U.S. Army team have performed quite nicely over the first 10 races of the year. They have banked four victories, the most recent one coming at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. two weeks ago.

"It's so far so good," he offered. "There's plenty of season left, that's for sure. We'll play them one at a time, while looking to improve at each race."
