Tony Pedregon Qualifies Second at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park

Englishtown, NJ, June 19, 2004 --Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon and the Quaker State racing team completed qualifying today for the NHRA Nationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ. For the 24th time in his career, Pedregon will enter race day as the number two qualifier with his run from Friday night of 4.856 seconds at 305.01 mph.

During the first session today, Pedregon drove to the quickest elapsed time of the session, in the heat of the day, clocking the Quaker State Chevrolet at 4.981 seconds at 303.50 mph. During the second session the car was running too hard, slowing to an elapsed time of 5.292 seconds at 207.46 mph.

"In that last session we were on a low 4.90 run," said Pedregon. "Our data showed that it was ahead every step of the way from the first session. But it got out of the groove a little bit, which caused it to slow down. Considering the weather conditions today, the car adapted very well. Tomorrow it's supposed to be a little cooler so we should see some great racing."

Pedregon will face Terry Haddock when final eliminations begin tomorrow, at 11:00 a.m. (ET). Pedregon has a 2-0 advantage over Haddock in race day competition. This is Pedregon's 197th career Funny Car race.

Pedregon's teammate and brother Cruz Pedregon qualified 3rd with his run from Friday night of 4.885 seconds at 293.09 mph.

ESPN will televise two hours of final eliminations coverage on Sunday, June 20, from 5:00 p.m. --7:00 p.m. (ET).
